About

About us

A small shop for things that last

Linden & Clay is a studio and a shop in one: we make stoneware at the back, and at the front we sell it next to the linen and lamps of the people we work with.

The studio shop inside: oak tables and shelves of handmade stoneware on a terracotta floor, under a vaulted ceiling and a rattan pendant

Our story

It started with one kiln and a lot of test tiles

In 2019 we rented a narrow workshop in a lane lined with linden trees, the tigli that gave the lane and then the shop its name, and started throwing the plates we could not find anywhere else.

Friends asked for sets, then neighbours, then people we had never met. We added a counter at the front, a few tablecloths from a weaver we admired, a lamp from a workshop down the river. The lane still smells of linden flowers in June.

We are still small on purpose: a short range, made in batches, sold by people who can tell you how each piece was made.

What we care about

Three simple rules

Made to be used

Nothing here is too good for a Tuesday. Plates go in the dishwasher, linen goes in the machine, lamps get switched on every evening.

Fewer, better things

We keep a short range and restock it slowly. When a piece sells out, it is back when the next kiln or loom is ready, not before.

Fair to the maker

We agree prices with each workshop before the work starts, pay on delivery, and put their names on our pages.

Who makes it

Our studio and the workshops we buy from

Two hands trimming the rim of a pale stoneware bowl with a loop tool on a potter's wheel

Stoneware

Our studio, Bologna

Two wheels, one gas kiln and a shelf of test tiles. Every plate, bowl and lamp base in the shop is thrown and glazed here.

Two hands passing a wooden shuttle through pale blue and natural linen threads on a floor loom

Linen and wool

A weaving workshop in the hills

A family workshop with four looms, weaving and washing our tablecloths, napkins and throws in small runs.

Two hands fitting a smooth off-white linen drum shade onto a round pale sea-green stoneware lamp base, a coil of cable beside it

Lamps and lanterns

A lighting workshop by the river

Two makers who wire, turn and assemble every lamp by hand, and weave the rattan shades on a wooden mould.
