Every week someone sits down at our desk and asks which fuel they should choose. The honest answer is that it depends less on the car than on your week. Three questions usually settle it.
1. How far do you drive on a normal day?
If most of your trips are under 50 km and you can charge at home or at work, an electric car is the cheapest to run and the most relaxing to drive in traffic. Turin’s limited-traffic zone and the growing number of chargers make it easier every year.
2. How often do you take long trips?
If you drive to the coast or the mountains most weekends, a full hybrid gives you low consumption in town without planning charging stops. A modern petrol car is still a sensible, affordable choice for low yearly mileage.
- Short city trips, home charging: electric
- Mixed city and motorway: full hybrid
- Low yearly mileage, tight budget: petrol
- Long motorway runs, towing: diesel
3. What will the car cost you in five years?
Compare the total, not the list price: fuel or electricity, insurance, servicing and what the car will be worth when you sell it. We are happy to put two or three options side by side on one page.
Choose for the week you actually have, not the road trip you might take once a year.
Not sure yet? Book a test drive of two different cars on the same morning: ten minutes in each usually makes the choice obvious.
